Marketing and Design for Mining Company, South32

We have significant experience with marketing and communication in the mining industry. Aware of this fact, the communications specialist at South32 reached out to us to assist in taking South32’s Hillside Aluminium smelter to new heights.

For more than 20 years, South32 has played a key part in South Africa’s aluminium industry. The Hillside Aluminium smelter in Richards Bay produces high-quality, primary aluminium for export markets.

As a large organisation, you need to be able to effectively communicate with staff, key stakeholders and the community, sometimes at the drop of a hat. From internal and external communication, to global campaigns and awareness programmes, you need strong messaging and visual elements that resonate with individuals from all walks of life.

The overall brand identity for South32 had already been established, so it was simple for us to make magic with the Hillside team, across a range of projects.

Our services for Hillside Aluminium have included, but are not limited to:

Marketing material:
A range of marketing material to create awareness around important topics like, mental health, diabetes, HIV and AIDS, the environment, etc., through digital screens, WhatsApps, flyers, posters, tent cards, adverts, etc.

Airport and in-house signage to communicate key messages.

Toolbox talks:
A range of toolbox talks to create awareness around safety and COVID-19.

Translation services:
Working with experienced translators to translate English campaigns and content into isiZulu, Setswana, Afrikaans, and Portuguese.

Marketing workshop:
We meet with the South32 communications specialist to discuss past projects and upcoming projects. Thereafter, we put together a calendar and rolled out campaigns accordingly.

Two of our biggest projects were the Hillside Open Area and COVID Controls Communication.

Open Area:
This involved a complete makeover of Hillside’s most active space with regards to foot traffic. We transformed the open area with eye-catching designs and informative messaging that were printed on wallpaper and glued to the walls.

COVID Controls Communication:
A full campaign that began in English and was then rolled out in isiZulu, Setswana, Afrikaans and Portuguese. Messaging focused on maintaining safe and productive operations during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as how to reduce the risk of infections amongst the workforce and community during the pandemic.

South 32, Hillside Aluminium is a proactive communicator, tackling tough subjects to ensure the safety and well-being of their team, and their community.
